Filament tracking for the Snapmaker U1

Spoolroom can log every finished print from a Snapmaker U1 on its own, with the grams for each of the four filaments, the slicer thumbnail and the timelapse, and take each color off the spool that actually printed it. It's confirmed on a real U1, and there is nothing to switch on.

How it works

The U1 runs Klipper, and its Moonraker service is already listening on your network. The watcher is a small helper you run on a box that stays on at home: a Raspberry Pi, a mini PC, a NAS. It talks to Moonraker over your own network, only reads, never controls the printer, and only connects outward to Spoolroom.

When a job ends, the watcher reads the grams for each filament from the sliced file's metadata, where Snapmaker's slicer (like every Orca-family slicer) wrote them. If a file doesn't carry per-filament weights, it logs one total instead: the length of filament the printer actually extruded, turned into grams. Canceled and failed prints are logged too, so a half-finished job still comes off the spool.

Four extruders, four spools

In the app, tell Spoolroom which spool is loaded on each of the U1's four extruders (open the printer, then Loadout). That is what a print is charged against.

The catch with a U1 is that the sliced file numbers filaments in the slicer's order, and the printer decides at the start of each print which extruder prints which filament. The watcher reads that assignment from the printer while the print runs, so the purple filament is taken off the purple spool even when it ran on extruder 3 rather than extruder 1. When it can't be sure, because the print ended while the watcher was off, or the job is older than the watcher, it leaves that filament for you to assign rather than guessing. A filament whose color clearly doesn't match the spool on its extruder is left for review the same way.

Setup

Snapmaker U1 and other Klipper printers with Moonraker

Confirmed

Confirmed on the Snapmaker U1. Other Klipper printers with Moonraker (Voron, Klipperized Enders) connect the same way and should work, but none is confirmed yet.

What to switch on

  1. Nothing to switch on: Moonraker is already listening on the printer.
  2. Setup looks for it on your network, or you type its IP.

What gets logged

Finished prints with grams per tool, read from the sliced file (Orca-family slicers), plus the slicer thumbnail and the timelapse where the firmware records one (Snapmaker U1). It can also read the filament loaded in a Creality CFS box, a Happy Hare MMU or an AFC unit such as a Box Turtle (all three experimental).

Any other printer running Klipper with Moonraker connects the same way; the Klipper guide covers those.

Thumbnail and timelapse

Every logged print carries the slicer's thumbnail. The U1 on stock firmware records a timelapse of each print; the watcher's setup asks whether to attach those to the log, and how to host the video files.

No watcher? It still works

The watcher is optional. Log a print by hand, or drop the sliced .gcode or .gcode.3mf file in and Spoolroom reads the grams per filament from it. See every printer the watcher reads.
